Seit den 1960er-Jahren haben Künstler verstärkt begonnen, die Bedingungen der Entstehung von Kunst – Produktion, Präsentation und Rezeption – in den Blick zu nehmen. Mit Minimal Art, Institutionskritik und Kontextkunst hat sich eine ambivalente Haltung gegenüber dem Objekt entwickelt. Das wirft die Frage nach dem Sinn und Zweck von Skulptur im gegenwärtigen Kontext auf. Die Publikation präsentiert Arbeiten zeitgenössischer Künstler, die sich durch einen prozessorientierten Ansatz auszeichnen und sich bei der Formfindung explorativ mit den unterschiedlichsten Materialien und Handlungen auseinandersetzen, und leistet damit einen überblicksartigen Beitrag zum Begriff des skulpturalen Handelns. Ein wichtiger Bezugspunkt dabei ist Richard Serras Verb List Compilation: Actions to Relate to Oneself  von 1967/68, in der er über 100 Verben zu konkreten Handlungen im Umgang mit verschiedenen Materialien zusammenfasst, etwa falten, biegen, reißen oder zerdrücken.

A witty, learned page-turner, replete with wacky anecdotes but suffused by wisdom and patriotic love. Metaxas shows how the biblical view of the human person made America possible, and weaves throughout the story pieces of evidence that Providence actively aided the pious patriots against their cynical, post-Christian enemies in Britain. I devoured this book in 72 hours, and now I want to go back and read it again.
