This walk heads off along the old Iron Railway to Sherriff’s Pit, a disused mine shaft on the west side of Rosedale. The views are magnificent, as the valley drops steeply away to your right with Rosedale nestled quaintly in the bottom. Walking through heather moorland on both sides the chatter of local birds including the curlew, golden plover, lapwing and nightjar are evident. Yet 160 years ago the air would have been full of soot and steam, with clanking machinery and men in abundance, working the Kilns at Rosedale West Mines. Your optional turning point is at Sheriff’s Pit, a 270ft deep vertical shaft, situated on your left, and dates back to circa 1857.

 

Start: Park in the lower Chimney Bank car park (next to the old iron kilns) on the road from Hutton le Hole to Rosedale Abbey. Post code: YO18 8SE

Distance: optional, the old Iron Railway line goes at least 4 miles (6.5km) with a further 4km if you wish.

What you will need:

In order for you to enjoy and take full advantage of the events on offer, it is imperative that you look after yourself and turn up with the appropriate kit. We highly recommend suitable outdoor clothing for the time of year and a reasonable level of fitness. Unfortunately, young people under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
