Vintage Polynesian Tangaroa Mask
Handmade in 1972 by an unknown artist whose signature is "KS". The artist carved the following into the back of the mask:
”Tangaroa” Polynesia KS 72
This gorgeous mask represents The Legend of Tangaroa. In Maori and Polynesian mythology, Tangaroa is the god of the ocean. Tangaroa made laws to protect the ocean and its sea creatures “Tiaki mai i ahau, maku ano koe e tiaki”… If you look after me, then I will look after you…”
A wall mount was built into the back of the mask to allow it to hang it mount on a wall.
Dimensions: L 13” • H 5.5”
The mask is in wonderful vintage condition. Wear is consistent with age and use. A detailed video of the item is available upon request.
